Winter [1-Minute Wednesday #5]

My 1-Minute Wednesday series pairs a brief piece of music with a piece of thought-provoking text.

WINTER

Snow fills even anxious city streets with winter’s quiet. A cold solemnity settles the spirit. We must all face winters that we would rather avoid. Times of rest when we are restless. Times of darkness with little light. Times of sorrow and little hope.

Forced to seek shelter, we rail against winter. But this season is a necessary contrast to summer; the light needs darkness; joy needs grief. Accept this, and the cold can carry peace. Times of rest and recovery. Times of stillness and introspection. Even times of stark beauty. Winter is calm before the urgency of spring.

Winters inevitably feel unending. We wait anxiously for the shift. But winter is unperturbed by our impatience. Slow, slow, slow. Spring will arrive when it is ready.

How do we know spring will eventually come? Because it always does...
